A pet wellness exam is a routine check-up that helps ensure your pet is healthy and can detect potential issues early.
Why Have a Pet Wellness Exam?
Your pet’s health starts and ends with wellness exams, and it’s important to keep them on a proper schedule. During these exams, we’ll do a full nose-to-tail examination, check eyes, ears, and mouth, and make sure that their vitals all look good. As your pet ages, we’ll use the information gathered during these visits to make sure they’re on a healthy path.
We may also use these visits to discuss your pet’s lifestyle, diet and nutritional needs, and ensure that they are up-to-date on vaccines.
Our team looks forward to seeing you annually (semi-annually for senior pets over the age of seven) and strengthening our bond with your family.
What Happens During A Pet Wellness Exam?
A pet wellness exam typically includes the following:
1. General Physical Examination
- Checking weight and body condition
- Assessing coat and skin health
- Examining eyes, ears, and nose for signs of infection or disease
- Checking the mouth, teeth, and gums for dental issues
- Listening to the heart and lungs with a stethoscope
- Palpating the abdomen to check for abnormalities
- Examining the joints and muscles for signs of pain or arthritis
2. Vital Signs Check
- Measuring temperature
- Checking heart rate and respiration
- Assessing hydration levels
3. Preventative Care
- Reviewing vaccination history and administering necessary vaccines
- Checking for external parasites (fleas, ticks, mites)
- Recommending heartworm, flea, and tick prevention
4. Diagnostic Testing (if needed)
- Blood tests to check organ function, blood cell counts, and overall health
- Fecal examination for parasites
- Urinalysis to check kidney and bladder health
- X-rays or ultrasounds (if any concerns arise)
5. Behavioral and Lifestyle Discussion
- Discussing any changes in behavior, appetite, or energy levels
- Providing recommendations on diet and nutrition
- Addressing exercise needs and weight management
- Evaluating dental care routine
6. Senior Pet Considerations (if applicable)
- Arthritis and joint health evaluation
- Cognitive function assessment
- Additional blood work to monitor aging-related conditions
A wellness exam is usually recommended annually for younger pets and semi-annually for senior pets or those with health concerns.
